Now that the initial shock is starting to wear off we now enter into the blame game. We want answers to why a 20-year-old man would walk into a school and killed 6-7 year old children and 6 teachers. What drove him to it? One answer being given by those on the far right politically and religiously is that God is punishing America for its many sins. Once again Fox News pundit Mike Huckabee leads the charge by blaming everything from homosexuality to MP3 players. Focus on the Family founder James Dobson also blamed homosexuality, specifically gay marriage, and abortion and claimed that “I think we have turned our back on the scripture and on God almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on.” Both Dobson and Huckabee as well as other far-right Christians make the claim that God used this shooter to enact God’s justice. If this is the case then why aren’t Huckabee, Dobson, and the rest of their ilk praising the shooter as a martyr doing God’s will. Why don’t they take their imbecilic logic to its inevitable end? The only difference between Mike Huckabee, James Dobson, and Bryan Fischer and the people of Westboro Baptist Church is that the WBC uses signs and Huckabee, Dobson, and Fischer use the airwaves. Let me go on record by saying that this kind of theology is total and complete crap. It is not biblical and it is not Christlike. It serves only to inflame and divide.
One other side of the discussion, I have heard many on the Left seek to blame the guns used instead of the person wielding them. Some want to repeal the 2nd Amendment and others want to limit the 2nd Amendment to only those weapons available in 1783. I doubt those same people would want the 1st Amendment limited to only communication technologies available in 1983. While I agree that something has to be done, wanting to ban all semi-automatic rifles and handguns and demonizing those Americans who choose to arm themselves does nothing to solve the problem at hand. There is not one person, not one on the Right or the Left, not one who owns 100 guns or one who owns no guns, not a Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Atheist who wants to see another child die at the hands of a madman.
We may never know what caused that young man to walk into a school and open fire. We cannot simply blame one aspect of this person. He didn’t do simply because his mother own guns. He didn’t do it because he had Asperger syndrome. He didn’t do it because he listened to Metallica or AC/DC. He didn’t do it because he played Call of Duty or another violent video game. I don’t know if he listened to Metallica or played Xbox. There is not one easy, all-encompassing solution to the problem. Even if you banned the production of guns there are still 300 million guns out there. Even if you prohibited private gun ownership there would still be criminals accessing guns illegally. Even if you forced everyone to go to church or pray in public schools it would not prevent this from happening. This is a nuanced problem that requires a nuanced and multifaceted solution. What we really need to do is stop demonizing each other and start listening to each other. Perhaps in the name of these murdered kids the NRA and the ACLU, the Right and the Left could lower their guards and come down from their barricaded walls and listen to each other and perhaps find a way to prevent a tragedy like this from repeating itself.
